Furcadia
Furcadia is an MMORPG that has been around since 1996, so it is very rich as a community and gameworld. The emphasis appears to be on role-playing rather than combat, but there is a whole games-oriented area, and content is very much user-driven. Players use Furcadia's scripting tools to create their own "dreams" which can range from socialising role-play to laser tag. You can play the basic game for free, or buy certain items and customisations, such as custom portraits. There are some adults-only areas. Furcadia claims to have over fifty per cent female members. And as of mid-2010, there are still thousands of regular players.
